My 31 year old convertible doesn't have AC. How do I change this?

It left the factory without AC. OEM AC parts are made of unobtanium. As I see it I’ve got 3 options: 1. Pay someone too much money, 2. Cobble something together, 3. Cooled seats with thermoelectric peltier elements. What would you do? And why?

Option 1 is out as it will be too expensive.

Option 2: cobble something together

Kinja'd!!!

The main parts are:

Compressor

Drier

Expansion valve

plumbing

Condenser

Evaporator

As I see it the compressor, drier, expansion valve and the plumbing can be solved with mostly junkyard parts from other cars. The condenser will be solvable as well I guess. Adding an on/off button and thermostat and whatnot should be possible too. That evaporator though, that one worries me. Where/how to mount it? It has to be a perfect under dash fit inside the air tubing.

Looking at original drawings I find these two pictures:

No AC

Kinja'd!!!

With AC (probably mirrored due to LHD/RHD)

To give you an image of the whole unit (without AC), see the pictures in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Other than the not model specific thermostat I can’t get the parts from the second picture. Still though, this seems to be what I have to emulate. Do I just buy a unit like the Ebay listing above and shove an evaporator in there somewhere?

Option 3: cooled (and heated) seats with thermoelectric peltier elements

As an alternative to AC I was thinking of doing this:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I don’t have leather and I do have an oversized alternator and battery, so it should work?

Any ideas? Preferences, pros and cons? Am I overlooking something? I’d love to hear everything!

just live without it or drive it more with the windows down.

It’s a convertible. I can lower the roof.

I might follow that advice and just do without, however I do want to keep my girlfriend (who’s all about ‘comfort’) to not dislike my already way too expensive project.

let her drive it on days not too hot, with the top down. then she’ll come to her senses.

Are you sure you wouldn’t be able to acquire second hand OEM componentry from cars being dismantled in Italy, Greece, Spain or Portugal – maybe even Morocco or Turkey?

Once you have the appropriate console/control panels, valves, pipes, wiring and A/C specific fan and heater etc (I imagine the tintop version would share the same bits) you would have to find brand new or reconditioned radiator, evaporator, condenser drier, etc. But many of those would be fairly standard across PSA, Renault and even other manufacturers, as you say.

It would be worth your while to find out in advance (in forums and consumer reports) common faults in the 205 A/C system (e.g. the expansion valve or whatever) and buy straight away the troublesome bits brand new.

I’d say go secondhand, reconditioned OEM. At least you would have an already-detailed procedure for maintenance and troubleshooting.

I take it that 205’s with AC weren’t exactly common, as you can’t find the original parts?

Personally I’d go for the heated/cooled seats, because heated seats are nice for topdown cruising!

My language skills are sadly limited to Dutch, English, German and a tiny (really tiny) bit of French. As long as they don’t list it on Ebay or something, I really wouldn’t know how to get used parts from the countries you mentioned.

Looking on https://www.leboncoin.fr/ I did find a 205 with AC for €1500, but importing a car from France just for those few parts is a bit silly and not worth it.

One additional issue for OEM parts I’ve got is that I’ve got a phase 1 Peugeot 205, meaning I’ve got the 1983-1987 dashboard.

They’re extremely rare in countries with moderate climates, and given the surge in 205 prices the parts that are for sale are very expensive and gone in seconds. There might be more available in Mediterranean countries, but that causes a language problem. Excluding France, where the parts are very highly sought after as well.

I’d start with eBay’s listings for those countries. Lots of ancillaries for sale at any given time. Automatic translation by eBay itself is far from perfect but not too misleading if you really know what you want/need. Also, pictures.

Being a phase 1 won’t help. I think Southern Europe markets really took off regarding fitment of A/C a bit later.

I have to say 1,500 euro for a car that would give you *everything” you need doesn’t sound too bad. When dealing with transplants a complete car is always the best option... having to find some little unobtainium bracket can be a hell of a pastime, let me tell you.

Is it too far away from you? Could you possibly go down there and buy it, spend one full day of frantic spannering with a couple of similarly deranged mates and sell afterward the sad remains to a local scrappy in order to recoup some costs?

I know, it’s a crazy idea.

I found that Spanish Ebay actually has many 205 AC compressors. But not the parts I need, or I’m unable to find the right search words. It does mean they dismantle the right cars over there. I can even find a beater with AC https://www.autoscout24.de/angebote/peugeot-205-1-8d-generation-diesel-gruen-bee27764-29f8-2e38-e053-e250040a6005?cldtidx=5

I’ll probably have to google-translate create an email to those AC compressor sellers to ask if they have other parts as well.

As a fellow convertible owner without AC I’ve thought about this too. I’d go with the seat elements. Seams like the least amount of work, and it’s so fancy!

It’s not living in South East Asia, Australia or the deserts of southern USA...wind down the window.

With AC, it’ll be a 30 year old gutless Peugeot. Without it’ll just be 30...

True, maybe I just want too much. It’s receiving a quite costly restoration though so while I’m at it...

I think the engine can handle a little parasite though. Before the engine swap it had the same drivetrain and chassis as the 205 GTi, by most regarded as the best hot hatch of the 80s. Now, with the engine swap it has more displacement and a turbo. I’m confident it’ll keep up with almost everything from its year now, save for the M3s and 911s of the time.

I was going for an electric compressor anyway, as it’s much easier to install. The compressor is the easy part though.

Edit: the second part of that link is interesting though.
